If you go from two to three children, you could suddenly find your car isn’t able to accommodate the whole family anymore, with many having a smaller seat in the middle that can’t accommodate a child seat. Here’s our pick of the best cars out there that can safely and comfortably take the whole family (plus luggage!)
Our top pick is the largest Peugeot SUV, the 5008. This seven-seater beauty not only looks great, but it’s packed with features and all three second row rear seats are fixed with ISOFIX anchor points. If you need even more space, the back two seats can take child seats with a seatbelt fastening. If you don’t need the two seats in the rear, these can be handily stored under the boot floor or taken out the car completely to give you loads of extra boot space.

At the higher priced end of the market, the Volvo XC90 certainly exudes luxury. It seats seven and is one of the safest cars on the road, which scores it highly on our list when travelling with precious cargo. Four of the five seats in the back are full seats with the two outermost second row seats having ISOFIX points and if you don’t need the back two seats the boot is huge.

A traditional MPV shape, the SEAT Alhambra is an extremely practical family car. Featuring seven seats, it has three ISOFIX points in the second row of rear seats, making it perfect for larger families. We have put it third on our list because it also features rear sliding doors to make access to the back even easier, particularly in tight car parking spaces.

Another MPV, this time from the quintessentially French auto maker. The C4 SpaceTourer is economical to run and comes with plenty of mod cons. Crucially, it has three full size seats in the second row, each fitted with an ISOFIX point. You can also choose to use the third row of seats, or store them away and use the boot space instead.

If you have a bigger budget, the Audi Q7 is huge and the middle row has loads of room, with all the seats sliding backwards for more legroom and they can recline too. It has an amazing six ISOFIX points, one for every rear passenger seat, and even the basic models come with some very smart leather upholstery and a spec bursting with features.

The Ford S-Max is a hugely popular choice for larger families. With seven seats, you can choose the arrangement of the back seats to suit your needs. There are three ISOFIX points on the second row and it’s cheap to run.
